Acquire the knowledge and skills to manage your assets like a business.

Our Mission

The Royalty Owner Institute is committed to providing mineral owners with the knowledge and skills to manage their royalty assets as a business and not mailbox money.

Our Journey

The journey began in 2012 when Dr. John Baum was a professor in the Neeley School of Business at TCU and the Associate Director of the TCU Energy Institute. He had noticed that all of the universities in the oil patch were providing educational programs for the oil & gas companies, but none of them were providing programs that were designed specifically for royalty owners. He recruited a team of oil & gas and minerals management experts to develop a curriculum of educational programs that were aimed directly at royalty owners. The first program was offered in January, 2013 and approximately 2,700 royalty owners have successfully completed one or more of the programs during this period. A sizable percentage of the past participants have completed all of the programs.

John recruited an outstanding staff to administer the programs and a team of instructors who are experienced oil & gas attorneys that focus on advising and representing royalty owners. They are terrific teachers who know how to relate to new and experienced royalty owners. The learning experience is rigorous and fast paced, but the instructors are always open to personal questions and discussion from the participants. The staff works hard to create an open, friendly, and productive environment that enhances learning and puts the participants at ease. They are encouraged to improve their networking skills with the other royalty owners in the programs so they can benefit from these new relationships in the future. The overriding goal is to provide the participants with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to manage their precious mineral assets in a business-like manner. The end result is a much higher return on investment from these assets.

Our Team

Our instructors provide you with the best learning experience possible and the knowledge to take your energy development to the next level.

Founder and President

Dr. Baum is the founder and president of the Royalty Owner Institute (ROI), a non-profit organization that provides education and support to royalty owners in Texas and throughout the United States. After completing a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin – Madison, John has enjoyed three careers: college professor, business executive, and entrepreneur. He began his first career as a college professor serving on the business school faculties at Purdue University and the University of Texas at Austin. In order to gain “real world” experience in the business world, John joined Texas Instruments as the Chief Learning Officer of the company. He worked closely with senior managers and executives to develop more effective leadership skills. John later returned to academics as a professor in the Neeley School of Business at Texas Christian University. While at TCU, he taught energy management courses at the undergraduate and MBA levels and also served as the Executive Director of the Tandy Center of Executive Leadership. John later became the Associate Director of the TCU Energy Institute.

Following his retirement from TCU in 2012, John began his entrepreneurial career. He had developed a passion for educating royalty owners. None of the universities or consulting firms in the oil patch were providing educational programs that were designed specifically for royalty owners. He designed and developed the Royalty Owner Programs and began offering them under the sponsorship of the TCU Energy Institute. Almost 2,000 royalty owners have completed one or more of the programs since their inception. In 2018, he formed the Royalty Owner Institute to house the programs and provide education and support to the estimated 2 million royalty owners in Texas and 15 million in the United States.

John and his family live in Corinth, Texas. They have four grown children and four grandchildren who brighten their lives and keep them busy. John owns a ranch in West Texas that conducts cow-calf operations and provides a nice change of pace from city life.
He is blessed to be a royalty owner on his ranch.

"The royalty owner courses offered have been a great resource to my company and my staff as well as the family we represent. As the mangers and ROW Agent for a family owned 15k acre ranch in West Texas, we have used the intensive 3-day program as a requirement for new hire staffing. I personally have even taken this 3-day intensive course twice since 2015. The class environment allows us to compare how we are handling various situations to other owners and be updated on the latest methods and legal issues by the instructors. Changes in this industry are constant so it is vital to stay informed, network and continue to educate yourself. I have encouraged the various family members we represent to take the courses as well. I can't say enough about the instructors and the material provided."

Kelly M. HallKmH-H, LLC Specialty Asset & Operations Management

“I have learned that when you as a mineral owner sign a lease with an oil company that you are signing it for your grandkids! The Royalty Owners Program has made me a much better manager of my the properties my family is fortunate to have. I was so impressed with the program and the instructors that I have sent family members and clients to the course. Most mineral owners are not informed and therefore may not know what to look for in leases and surface use agreements. If you or a family member manages minerals for your family, this course is a must! It’s not what you know, it’s what you don’t know that is the most important! The course taught me to look at the many components in the lease documents and surface use agreements to better protect our family. Remember, when you execute a lease, it may be forever, be well informed. The Royalty Owners Program did that for me.“

Ferd Hoefs

"I was extremely pleased with the ROI Royalty Owner Program which I recently attended. An excellent course! The program was taught as an educational class, not a typical seminar. The program imparted a great deal of valuable, high quality information in a brief period of time. Such a pleasure. Glen is an excellent, well versed educator who's enthusiasm for the subject and audience is clearly demonstrated. The Royalty Owner program exceed my expectations. I will actively recommend ROI programs to anyone involved with royalty issues."
